Hometown: Yukon OK.

Background:

Born to Ted and Annabelle Copland on April 14th, 1982 in Yukon, Oklahoma, Jolene was a troubled child right out of the gate. Causing her mother nearly thirty-six hours of intense labor, it was a fact which her "momma" would generously remind her of often, throughout her younger years. From the moment she was old enough to protest, she wanted to be known simply as "Jo" and never Jolene. (Named after a song by the same title from her mothers idol miss Dolly Parton). To this day many people do not know that Jo is short for Jolene, and simply assume it is short for Joanna or Joanne. She does not bother to correct them.

Naturally intelligent, school came easy to Jo. She generally placed in the top 5% of her class every year, and managed to do so without even breaking a sweat or hardly ever cracking open a book. She spent much of her time down at the creek with her small group of friends, finding trouble around every corner, and basking in the glow of a rebellious troubled adolescence. A problem that only amplified when her mother was stolen from her on the eve of her 15th birthday. A drunk driver didn't quite swerve fast enough to miss Annabelle who was walking home from a late night shift at the local bar. (Irony at it's finest in Jo's opinion. Her mother run down by a man intoxicated on liquor she had been serving him.) An only child, thanks to the fact that her mother had not wanted to go through another intense labor, this tragedy left only Jo and her father to care for one another. A situation that was all to lonely for the changing and growing 15 year old child.

Her father began to work extra shifts at the garage to keep food on the table, and Jo found the free time his absence provided to be her favorite play thing. It didn't take long, however, for her choice in activities to catch up with her, and at 16 she found herself at the mercy of the juvenile court after an attempted robbery on a neighboring farm went wrong. The older couple who the property belonged to, (Knowing the Copland's story, as everyone else did in their not quite big enough town), took pity on the young woman and offered the judge an alternate solution to the two years locked up in the system she was facing. She would come to work for them. They were too old to tend to their own ranch and horses any longer, and had been looking to hire a stable hand anyway.

Second chances didn't come often. For Jo Copland one happened to land right in her lap, at the exact moment she needed it. It was while working on the Jenkins’s farm that Jo discovered her true passion for horses. Their drive and need for freedom, the grace with which they moved, and the speed - god the speed - it made her feel alive. Truly alive for the first time since her mother's death. She had found something that needed her, that gave her happiness and contentment. And she intended to hold tight to it forever, however long that might be.

After completing her "sentence" at the Jenkins’s farm, she stayed on and continued the work she had been required to do before. It didn't pay well - 180.00 bucks a week - but it didn't matter to her. She was doing something she loved, something she needed. In return, they also allowed her to ride when she wanted, and for Christmas her 18th year, they even gave her one of their old mare's she had fallen in love with her first day on their farm. Dolly, (another ironic twist in her life that she often found herself laughing about), was a solid chocolate mare that rode smoother than any car ever could. Jo would give younger kids riding lessons on the weekends in an attempt to help her pop out as much as possible.

Their life was never easy and the road they had to travel was never smooth. But they had food in their bellies and smiles on their lips so as far as they saw it, there was not a damn thing they were entitled to complain about.

Last year, however, Jo's father was involuntarily moved into a local senior center. The farm, too much for her to care for on her own, was sold. The Jenkins and Dolly having passed on, as the last decade slipped by. Jo found herself standing up at the gates of freedom, and figured what the hell did she have to lose with everything already lost? So she walked through them, one step at a time, her backpack filled with memories of home and a life that could no longer be. She forced a smile on her lips, and left yesterday in the rear-view mirror, looking for a new place to live the rest of her today's.

Facts:

Being born on April 14th, she was born on tax day in America. Therefore, her father called her his "little write off". Her mother finally put a stop to it at Jolene's first birthday party, after taking note of the looks on her friends and families faces at his choice in nicknames.

Her favorite musical artists include, but are not limited to: Carrie Underwood, Garth Brooks, and Christian Kane. But whenever she is in a bad mood, she puts on a little Dolly Parton to fill her head with thoughts of her mother.

She writes. A hobby she picked up while working on the Jenkins farm, after discovering the beauty of horse back riding. She had kept countless journals, chronicling her life. She figures one day, after she passes, her loved ones (assuming she has any left) can find them like a secret treasure, and peek into the REAL life of the girl they thought they knew.

Although she was born and raised on a farm, she never rode a horse or even sat on one until the Jenkins farm.

She has a trick knee. The summer after she turned 16 she was cliff diving with her friends when she took one a little to close to the side, and busted her knee on the rocks needing a few pins and screws to mend her together again. She doesn't, however, let this stop her.

She was in love once, but the romance was short lived. He was in love too, with someone else. She doesn't talk about it but has yet to trust her heart with anyone else since.

She is a true believer in the motto's: No Pain, No Gain and Normal is just a facade created by people with really boring lives.

She received her journalism degree in 2009 through online courses. Figuring that with her creative wit, and no bullshit attitude, a columnist might just be the best profession for her to find her way into.

Her AIM handle is JoDrinksJack due to the fact that aside from coffee, her beverage of choice is a glass of Jack Daniels on, or even off, the rocks.
